A reader recently asked me a question that gets to the heart of AI training as a career. After several months working through Mercor, they were earning enough to consider leaving their regular job. But they knew they could lose their place on the project. Was the whole market like this? Were there more permanent, stable opportunities?

The attraction is understandable. Your expertise finally commands a meaningful rate. You can work remotely. A few hours of focused work can change what a week feels worth.

In an October 5 Reddit discussion, a micro1 contributor described earning $19 an hour at an in-person job and $50 an hour on the platform. Commuting made the comparison even more tempting. They had been on micro1 for about a month.

They expected even a slow week to provide twenty hours. That expectation was the part I would examine first.

Can AI training replace a full-time job?

It can become a primary income source for some people. Whether it can support your life depends on available work, payment terms, expenses, other income and what happens between projects. A high hourly rate answers only one part of that question.

Mercor’s official guidance says projects can end because of completion, scope changes or budget constraints. An ordinary project ending need not damage your standing. You can do good work and still need another assignment.

Start with one question: What would your working life look like if your best project ended next Friday?

I want to help you answer that, then go further. AI training can be a starting point for learning how these systems work, developing useful judgment and building a broader career in AI. That takes deliberate work alongside the paid tasks.

Make your next move with a plan. Continue as a paid reader to work through:

  • A five-question contract audit and a worksheet for weeks without work.

  • A practical way to weigh the cost and value of a backup project.

  • A 30-day learning plan and an evaluation exercise you can turn into a portfolio piece.

Use these to compare your options, identify what to clarify before resigning, and build skills for your next AI role.

For the learning section, two public starting points are Andrej Karpathy’s Deep Dive into LLMs like ChatGPT and How I Use LLMs. The exercises below connect that learning to work you can show.

Previous highlights: paid readers can also revisit AI Training Assessment Preparation and The Mercor Profile Prompt.
