When Your Hourly Rate Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story

A 90-second look at the unpaid work behind AI training—and how to compare what an opportunity really pays.

An $80-an-hour project sounds better than a $55-an-hour project. But what happens when you count the work that never appears on the invoice?

In this 90-second video, I compare two hypothetical AI training projects. One offers a higher rate but requires more unpaid preparation. The other pays less per hour but provides more paid work. Across the same nine hours, the second project earns more.

The point isn’t to avoid every assessment or always choose the lower rate. A project might offer valuable experience or a credible path to future work. Those benefits deserve consideration—but they shouldn’t be treated as guaranteed.

Before your next assessment, ask: Am I eligible? How much work happens before payment? Are successful applicants joining an active project?

Then track the time you actively spend applying, preparing, and following up. You don’t need to count every hour spent waiting for an answer.

Watch the video below for the calculation. For a practical framework on comparing opportunities, limiting unpaid effort, and building a more sustainable working life, read the full article:
